The first ever Macallan single cask finished in Japanese oak, and the first of The Macallan Mizunara Trilogy. Distilled in June 1988 and aged 29 years in an ex-bourbon cask, it was re-racked in 2018 into Mizunara grown for over 200 years in the forests of Hokkaido, where long, cold winters give a tight grain ideal for maturation.
Mizunara’s porosity and hardness make finishing a whisky this rare a bold endeavour — one never before undertaken because of the risks to flavour and leakage. Monitored at every step by experts in Scotland, it was bottled at the perfect balance of Highland single malt character and Japanese oak.
